Abstract

Given the importance of the species Digitaria eriantha as forage resource for the central temperate semiarid zone of Argentina, a study was carried out to compare the methylation rate of 5-methylcitosine in citosine residues of genomic DNA and its relationship to growth indicators. For this trial the synthetic cultivar Avanzada INTA and a native cultivar, Sudafricana, were selected. The protocol proposed by Fraga, Rodríguez and Cañal (2000) was used, which allows to determine the methylation of genomic DNA in less
than 15 minutes. The cv. Avanzada INTA is concluded to be tolerant to cold weather; while cv. Sudafricana is sensitive, because the methylation rates are similar throughout the treatments at low temperatures. This
work contributes to the early selection of germplasm tolerant to cold weather.
