Abstract

A group of swardy grasses were evaluated in order to study their behaviour to be used in sward of
golf fields and green swards from hotels. Some accessions were evaluated: Cynodon dactylon
(bermudagrass 328), C. dactylon “común”, Opizia stolonifera, Brachiaria dictyoneura CIAT-16886
(dictyoneura 16886), B. humidicola cv. IRI-409 (IRI-409), B. subcuadriparia, Arachis postrata,
Stenotaphrum secundatum, Paspalum notatum and Paspalum sp. Evaluation was conducted taking
into account the times spent among sowing and the first cutting, botanical composition, and
morphological, structural and physiological characteristics of these grasses. Bermudagrass 328 was concluded to have favourable characteristics to be used in game areas for golf fields; meanwhile, O.
stolonifera, Paspalum sp., S. secundatum, B. dictyoneura 16886, C. dactylon “común” and P. notatum
were recommended for hotel swards and rought areas of golf fields where B. subcuadriparia may also
be used but IRI-409 resulted to be better due to its perennity. A. pintoi may be used as a covering
crop but as a swardy grass under cutting treatments it is not suggested.
