This work, carried out under the premise that managers are one of the main supports to face the new challenges of the national economic recovery, had the objective of identifying the characteristics and behaviors that better define a good manager nowadays, as well as which characteristics and behaviors must receive priority for a more efficacious management that contributes to the increase of management and competitiveness levels in current Cuban firms, and the implementation of the firm improvement system. The methodology used allowed the inclusion of new attributes which had not been taken into consideration before, as well as the improvement of the instruments proposed for the evaluation of the two selected criteria. For the identification
of the attributes, the bibliographical sources and the experts’ criteria were used. The existence of a group of attributes was proved that allows to describe the personality profile and the behavior of a good manager according to Cuban experts. It was corroborated that there is a number of characteristics and behaviors that must be developed in the managers of Cuban firms in order to achieve a more efficacious management. Regarding this, the efforts must be concentrated on the attributes: ethical, visionary, creative, analytical and autonomous in the profile, which were given priority by the experts; while regarding behavior the attributes selected were: to allow participation in the analysis and decision-making, to promote teamwork, to look for feedback, to be open to dialogue; to express acknowledgement and to dedicate time to collaborators. The application of questionnaires that allow to evaluate such characteristics and behaviors is recommended as well as to design a coherent development plan which facilitates the learning of the attributes that guarantee an efficacious management and thus the increase of management and competitiveness levels in current Cuban firms.
