Abstract

Three tropical forages (bermudagrass 68, guineagrass cv. Likoni and taiwan-144) were used for silage conservation in order to obtain lactic acid bacteria for using them as biological inoculants. Bacteria were collected from a MRS medium after 6,8 and 10 days of conservation. 49% of bacteria were found to be homofermentative, the rest being heterofermentative or belonging to other bacterial groups were rejected. The following tests were made: growing at different temperatures (30, 45 and 50°C) and pH (3,5; 4,0 and 4,5); fermentation in sugars: glucose fructose and saccharose, acidity generated on MRS liquid medium. Automatical classification system was applied to these results which distributed the bacteria in seven groups where group II resulted to have the best characteristics. The most outstanding strains (17 and 39) within the group had a faster growth than the rest. API Lactobacillus system was used for bacterial classification and fermentative patterns concerning with Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus acidilactici bacteria which are efficient for silage conservation were obtained.
