Abstract

A study was conducted on Taiwan A-144 and Selección 1 (P. purpureum) and king grass (P. purpureum x P. typhoides) to evaluate the behaviour of these three grasses during the dry season without irrigation. A randomized block design with four replications was used in a brown soil with carbonate. Cutting frequencies were made every 60 days and 75 kg of N/ha were applied. Significative differences (P<0,01) favourable to king grass (6,9 vs 5,4 and 4,1 t of DM/ha) were observed. The greatest height, leaf content and the major population was found with king grass and Taiwan A-144 cultivar. It is concluded that Taiwan A-144 cv. is a very interesting grass under these conditions, and longer experiments in this and other types of soils together with the inclusion of others strain of Taiwan cultivar are recommended.
